Barcelona fans were left in awe on Sunday after Argentine icon, Lionel Messi shared photos from inside a redeveloped Camp Nou, marking his first visit to the stadium since leaving the club in 2021.
The Inter Miami forward, currently preparing with Argentina ahead of their friendly against Angola, posted a deeply personal message with the images.
“Last night I returned to a place I miss with my soul. A place where you guys made me feel a thousand times the happiest person in the world. I hope one day I return, and not just to say goodbye as a player, as I never got to…” he wrote.
The surprise visit has already fueled speculation about a potential future return to Barcelona. Messi departed for Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent in 2021 after financial issues prevented a new contract with the Catalan club.
How Messi accessed Camp Nou remains a small mystery. According to journalist Roger Saperas, the visit was arranged through LIMAK, the construction company handling the stadium renovations.
“Messi’s return took place yesterday without speaking to anyone from the club. It’s a demonstration of his love for Barça,” Saperas shared.
Helena Condis Edo from Radio Cadena COPE added that Messi personally sought permission from the staff, which the club happily granted. Barcelona confirmed, “Messi will always receive the warmest welcome in Barcelona.”
The timing of the visit was perfect. Camp Nou had just reopened for limited public access after weeks of renovation, and Messi took the opportunity while in Spain for national team duties.
