He has taken to social media to express his disappointment
He was carried off in tears by his Argentina teammates Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel.
United fans’ worst fears were revealed on Friday when the defender was ruled out for the rest of the season with a metatarsal fracture.
Martinez took to Instagram to address his supporters after the news, saying: “Not the way I imagined what’s been a very special season would end, but sometimes we face obstacles along the way that we have to overcome to make us stronger and we learn from them.
“I know that I’ll be back very soon to go for more. In the meantime, I’ll continue to support all my team-mates to achieve our objectives.
“The number of messages and support I’ve received has been amazing, they’re giving me strength and encouragement at this moment.
“Many, many thanks to you all from the bottom of my heart.”

Martinez has proved to be a superb addition to United since his arrival from Ajax in the summer.
The 25-year-old has kept 20 clean sheets in 45 matches across all competitions.
He has also formed a reliable centre-back partnership with Raphael Varane, but he too is expected to be out of action in the coming weeks.
United face a tough run of fixtures as they approach the end of what could be a highly successful season.

The defender is certainly a fan favourite amongst the United faithful
Erik ten Hag’s side drew 2-2 against Sevilla on Thursday night and know they will need to improve to stand any chance of progressing to the semi-finals.
They also sit 4th in the Premier League table, with qualification for the Champions League still on the cards, as well as an FA Cup win.
