March 23, (THEWILL) -The England Football Association has charged Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers for misconduct towards the referees during their respective matches.
United players faced the wrath of the FA for their behaviour towards the referee during their 3-1 FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham. A second-half incident saw Aleksandar Mitrovic push referee Chris Kavanagh, which led to the FA charging both Mitrovic and head coach Marco Silva. United players also surrounded the referee, resulting in the club being charged for failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion. Both clubs have until Monday to respond.
Wolves were also charged for a similar incident during their English Premier League match against Leeds United. The controversy ensued after the referee failed to spot a foul on Adama Traore in the build-up to Leeds’ fourth goal. The decision caused Wolves players and staff to be incensed, and substitute Matheus Nunes was initially shown a red card for his reaction, which was later overturned on appeal. The club has been charged with failing to ensure that their players and technical area occupants behaved appropriately towards the assistant referee and the fourth official.
The charges from the FA add to the already growing list of controversies that have plagued English football this season. With both clubs having until Monday to respond to the charges, the situation remains tense and could potentially result in some fines or possible suspensions.
