Manchester United hatch plan to stop David de Gea getting paid millions as potential back-up goalkeeper

Manchester United are readying new terms for David de Gea in a bid to potentially save them millions.

The Spain international remains No.1 at Old Trafford after question marks arose over whether he would suit Erik ten Hag’s style of play.

De Gea had reason to celebrate with two incredible saves

But the shot-stopper has answered his critics with a series of performances showcasing his incredible skills between the posts.

De Gea currently earns £250,000-a-week at United after penning a mega-deal in 2019 and the club are planning on paying him less – but with a catch.

According to The Sun, they might lower the goalkeeper’s weekly wage but incentivise the deal with extra payments and bonuses.

One of the main inclusions is a clause that means that he must start about half of the 60-plus games a season in all competitions to hit the maximum salary.

Due to his service to the club, United intend on honouring De Gea’s contract by not selling him on – with two years left on his deal.

But the Old Trafford chiefs do not want the Spaniard becoming an expensive back-up player.

De Gea has been in form this season

The 32-year-old has been in fine form for the Red Devils this season and has 10 clean sheets in 24 Premier League matches.

There have also been four clean sheets in the Europa League, a competition that Erik ten Hag is keen on winning this season.

De Gea has been with United since 2011 and has made 524 appearances for the club and is in the conversation as their best-ever goalkeeper.

Henderson had been tipped to replace De Gea

However, a long-term successor has been eyed by the club while Dean Henderson had been tipped as a potential replacement.

The Englishman starred for United towards the end of the 2020/21 season but has since been loaned out to Nottingham Forest after De Gea fought for his spot.

Porto star Diogo Costa has been the latest keeper to be strongly linked to Old Trafford, as well as Leeds ace Illan Meslier.
