A wedding master of ceremonies (MC) has shared his disturbing experience at a ceremony in Anambra State, where the groom allegedly refused to pay for the bridesmaids’ accommodation after the event.
According to the MC, who narrated the experience, the bridesmaids travelled from a polytechnic in Delta State to attend their friend’s wedding . They arrived a day before to celebrate the bride’s shower and participated actively in the event.
However, after the ceremony ended around 7 p.m., the groom reportedly ordered everyone to vacate the hotel, insisting he would not extend their stay for another night.
“I was shocked. The groom was shouting that he wouldn’t pay for the rooms again,” the MC recounted. “How do you expect young ladies who travelled that far to return to Delta State by 7 p.m., knowing how unsafe Nigerian roads are?”
MC condemns groom’s behaviour, calls it ‘disheartening’
Describing the situation as “unacceptable and disheartening,” the MC expressed concern over the safety and dignity of the bridesmaids, who were left stranded and vulnerable.
He noted that some groomsmen reportedly made inappropriate advances toward the women, exploiting the situation for personal gain.
“The groomsmen that had rooms were saying, ‘If you’re going to sleep in my room, I go touch you o.’ That is shameful and dangerous,” he said. “You’re making people’s daughters vulnerable” because of poor planning and selfishness.
He added that some people who reluctantly offered the bridesmaids space in their rooms even refused to allow them to order food, claiming they wouldn’t pay for it. “Why are people wicked to asho ebi girls?” he lamented. “If you can’t take care of your bridal train, don’t invite them at all.”
Calls for responsible wedding planning
The MC urged intending couples to be more considerate when planning their weddings, advising them to avoid unnecessary expenses or appearances that put others at risk.
He stressed that many bridesmaids and groomsmen attend weddings out of love and support, not because they expect to suffer hardship or humiliation.
“If you don’t have the financial capacity to accommodate people, use your family members or cousins as asho ebi girls,” he advised.
The viral post has since drawn mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians agreeing that some couples prioritise showiness over proper logistics and hospitality.
Others called for more empathy and accountability in how bridal teams are treated during weddings.
