In a harrowing incident in Kasuwan-Garba, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, a woman was brutally set ablaze by an enraged mob over accusations of blasphemy.
The victim, a local restaurant owner, allegedly made remarks deemed offensive during a conversation with a customer, according to community sources.
The altercation reportedly began when a customer playfully proposed marriage, referencing Islamic tradition, prompting the woman’s alleged blasphemous response.
She was initially taken to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan-Garba for questioning.
However, before a formal investigation could proceed, the mob overpowered security personnel, seized the woman, and set her on fire.
The Niger State Police Command has condemned the act and launched an investigation.
In a statement from Minna, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident occurred on August 30, 2025, around 2:00 pm.
“The mob attack was swift, and the victim was set ablaze before additional security forces could intervene,” Abiodun said, emphasizing that normalcy has been restored and efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.
Abiodun, further, urged the public to refrain from vigilante justice, stating, “We appeal to residents to remain calm and allow security agencies to handle such matters in accordance with the law.”
The incident has reignited concerns among residents and human rights advocates about the rising tide of mob violence, prompting calls for stronger measures to uphold law and order.
