Super Eagles star, Moses Simon, has voiced strong concern for Terem Moffi after the OGC Nice striker was violently attacked by a group of supporters following the club’s latest defeat.
Naija News reports that Terem Moffi and his teammate Jérémie Boga were set upon on Sunday night after Nice lost 3-1 to Lorient, a result that stretched their losing run to six games in all competitions. The atmosphere around the club has become increasingly hostile, with pressure growing on the side owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
French reports described chaotic scenes in which the two players were punched, kicked and spat on. Some of the blows were said to have been aimed at their genitals. Racist abuse was also directed at Moffi, who played the full game against his former club.
Boga was reportedly targeted over ticket issues linked to acquaintances from Marseille, while some ultras accused Moffi of “smiling” with former Lorient president Loïc Féry after the final whistle.
Still dealing with fitness problems, Moffi had to be helped to safety by his teammates before both players lodged formal complaints with the police.
Simon, who contacted Moffi shortly after the incident, told RMC Sport that his Super Eagles colleague is still struggling with the trauma.
“I talked with him, he is touched, and in addition, he still has a bit of pain. When something like that happens, it’s not good. For a big Ligue 1 club, it’s not good. That something like that could happen in a club of a top 5 European championship… It’s really a mess, so I really hope that the club and the Federation will do something.”
Medical tests carried out the next day confirmed that Moffi had suffered “physical and psychological impact” and he was placed on sick leave until Sunday. Boga received a medical certificate giving him at least five days’ rest.
Nice issued a firm statement condemning the attack, saying the acts were “unacceptable” and offering full support to the players. The French players’ union, UNFP, also expressed outrage, saying, “The physical and psychological integrity of those who make football is non-negotiable.”
