September 18, (THEWILL) — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has warned Nigerians against the use of falsified versions of Artemetrin DS, an anti-malarial drug, and Ciprofit 500, an antibiotic, currently in circulation in the country.
In a statement on Thursday, the agency disclosed that laboratory tests confirmed the products to be substandard and ineffective.
According to NAFDAC, the falsified Artemetrin DS, purportedly manufactured by A.C. Drugs Ltd, Enugu, was found to contain only 59.2% artemether and 71.2% lumefantrine, far below the required 90–110% range.
Similarly, the fake Ciprofit 500, which claimed to be produced by Impact Pharmaceutical Ltd, contained just 5.7% ciprofloxacin, making it ineffective for treating infections.
The agency added that both products, which carried fake NAFDAC registration numbers, are not listed in its official database.
“Consumption of these substandard medicines can lead to treatment failure, drug resistance, severe complications, or even death,” the statement warned.
NAFDAC advised Nigerians to avoid the products, report suspicious medicines, and seek urgent medical attention if they have already used them.
It further urged healthcare professionals and vendors to immediately return any stock of the drugs to the nearest NAFDAC office.
The agency said complaints can be lodged via its toll-free line 0800-162-3322 or by email at [email protected] .
