The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended two pilots of ValueJet for violating safety protocols during a flight operation at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The enforcement action, announced in a statement by the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, followed reports that the pilot initiated departure procedures without obtaining the mandatory pre-departure clearance.

According to the Authority, the act contravened civil aviation regulations and international safety standards and posed a threat to ground personnel and other airport users.

Describing the incident as a serious safety breach, the NCAA said it had taken immediate disciplinary action by suspending the licences of the pilot, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba, pending the outcome of a full investigation.

“This reckless action endangered the safety of ground personnel and other airport users,” the NCAA stated, adding that it views the matter “with utmost seriousness”.

The Authority reassured the public and stakeholders of its unwavering commitment to aviation safety, noting that regulatory measures will continue to be enforced without compromise.
