Kano Strategic Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has detained 49 individuals for drug-related offenses involving various quantities of illegal substances across the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Kano, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, revealed that the arrests were made during operations conducted on August 7 and 8 to combat drug-related crimes.
“During the raids on August 7 and 8, the agency targeted multiple notorious drug hotspots, apprehending 34 suspects at locations including Massallacin Idi, Fagge Plaza, Kofar Mata, Kofar Wambai, Kofar Dan’agundi, Makabartar Dan’agundi, Ladanai, Zage, and Tashar Rimi in Rimi Market,” he stated.
He further noted that additional raids at Kano Line Motor Park and Tashar Rami Motor Park in Na’ibawa led to the arrest of 15 more suspects.
Items seized from the suspects included cannabis sativa, Pregabalin, diazepam, codeine syrup, Rohypnol, “suck and die,” rubber solution, and locally crafted weapons.
The NDLEA State Commander, Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, emphasized that the operations were aimed at dismantling drug dens and disrupting trafficking networks in the state.
“Since the NDLEA’s operations were upgraded to a strategic command level, we have seen a significant improvement in the effectiveness and reach of our efforts,” Idris-Ahmad remarked.
He praised Retired Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba-Marwa, NDLEA’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, for his steadfast leadership and support.
“Buba-Marwa’s dedication to a drug-free society inspires our team to pursue our mission with greater determination,” he added.
Idris-Ahmad warned those engaged in drug trafficking to cease their activities, stressing that the agency remains relentless in its pursuit of a drug-free society.
“The NDLEA is committed to safeguarding the public from the perils of drug abuse and trafficking,” he affirmed.
Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will face court proceedings upon completion.
