() Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated President Donald Trump for the Israel Prize, the country’s highest cultural honor.
“I’ve submitted your nomination to be the first non-Israeli recipient of the Israel Prize,” Netanyahu said Monday in an address to the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.
“As to that other prize, it’s just a question of time. You’ll get it,” he added, in a nod to Trump’s quest for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Netanyahu described Trump as the “greatest friend that the state of Israel has ever had in the White House” and said “no American president has ever done more for Israel.”
Israel began receiving the last living hostages held by Hamas on Monday and prepared to release nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners under the terms of a ceasefire agreement in the war in Gaza.
Trump was passed over for the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday despite support from various world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was awarded the prize after being nominated last year by a group that included then-Sen. Marco Rubio, who is now Trump’s secretary of state.
Machado said she wanted to dedicate the win to Trump and to the people of her country, and praised Trump for his support of her cause.
After Machado’s statement, Trump touted his various peace efforts from the White House.
