New Awujale: Abiodun Tasks Kingmakers on Level Playing Ground for Contestants

August 25, (THEWILL) — Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has urged the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council to ensure a level playing ground in the process of selecting a new Awujale of Ijebuland.

The revered stool became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 after a reign of more than 65 years.

Speaking after a meeting with the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council at Iperu, the governor stressed the importance of filling the vacuum without delay.

“Nature abhors a vacuum, and the process of installing another Awujale has started. The pathway to having in place a regency is to ensure that all the i’s are dotted and the t’s crossed, and that the provisions of the laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed,” Abiodun said.

He assured that his administration would support whoever emerges at the end of the nomination process, while expressing optimism that the exercise would be transparent and rancour-free.

The governor described members of the Council as respected figures who played significant roles in maintaining peace and supporting the late monarch during his long reign.

“I had to first of all wait for the 40 days of mourning to pass before calling this meeting. What is most important is that they are all deeply committed chiefs of the Awujale, and I appreciate them.

“This is my first meeting with them to commiserate on the passing of our revered monarch and to reaffirm my confidence in them. The Council is intact, united, and working hand in glove with each other. There is no disharmony, and I am happy with today’s meeting,” Abiodun added.

Also speaking, the Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to peace and unity in Ijebuland, assuring that members would continue to work together for the progress of the kingdom.
