April 28, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United took another step towards their first appearance in the UEFA Champions League in nearly two decades with a 4-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park.
Callum Wilson’s brace, as well as goals from Joelinton and Jacob Murphy, helped the Magpies extend their unbeaten run to five games and move eight points clear of fifth place. Meanwhile, Everton, who only have one win in their last ten games, remain in the relegation zone, two points from safety.
Wilson continued his impressive record against the Toffees with his seventh and eighth goals in six matches, while Joelinton’s fourth in his last five games also contributed to a comfortable victory for the visitors. Despite Dwight McNeil pulling one back for the hosts with 10 minutes to go, Jacob Murphy immediately responded to extinguish any hopes of a comeback.
With Newcastle’s convincing win, the pressure continues to mount on Everton, who now face a crucial match against Leicester City, their immediate rivals in the relegation battle. Sean Dyche’s side cannot rely on the power of Goodison to extend their 69-year stay in the top flight with Manchester City being one of their two remaining home fixtures.
As dicey as it appears for Alex Iwobi and his teammates, they will have to perform against Leicester with their meet on Monday, a day after Newcastle welcome the team at the bottom of the table, Southampton, to St James’ Park.
