Newcastle United’s statement on Alexander Isak have fans digging deep: “cold”

Alexander Isak’s long-running transfer saga ended on September 1, when Liverpool completed a British record deal worth £125m [$167m] (fixed) to sign the 25-year-old striker from Newcastle United.

The Swedish forward, who had been pushing for a move after accusing the Magpies of breaking promises, signed a six-year contract and has been handed the number nine shirt at Anfield.

The deal capped a turbulent summer in which Isak was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia and the opening three Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Leeds United.

Solna born took to Instagram in August to clear his position. “The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading,” the post read

“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”

Newcastle strongly denied his claims, saying in a counterstatement that “We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.”

Nevertheless, deadline day brought closure as Liverpool struck the record-breaking deal, which reportedly could reach £130m [$176m] with add-ons and for the Premier League champions, it pushed their summer spending to about £416.2m [$557m], not including potential bonuses.

Isak has left Tyneside with 62 goals in 109 games since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022 with his most memorable moment coming last season in the Carabao Cup final, when his strike against Liverpool sealed Newcastle’s first major trophy in 70 years.

Despite that achievement, his relationship with the club soured quickly this summer, leaving him with few well-wishers among Magpies supporters.
