Nigerian businesses thrive in Ghana despite false anti-Nigerian protest claims — Nnaji

Former President of the Nigerian Union of Traders Association in Ghana (NUTAG), Chukwuemeka Nnaji, has confirmed that Nigerian businesses and residents in Ghana remain safe and unaffected, countering viral social media narratives suggesting anti-Nigerian protests.

In a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on August 1, 2025, Nnaji emphasized that these reports are baseless and designed to sow discord between Nigerians and Ghanaians.

“The malicious social media posts, amplified by uninformed platforms, falsely claimed Nigerians are responsible for social issues in Ghana,” Nnaji stated.

“No law-abiding Nigerian has faced any hostility, and these reports are misguided attempts to create hatred between our peoples.”

Nnaji praised the Ghanaian government’s commitment to protecting all residents, noting, “The Government of Ghana has consistently upheld justice, fostering a supportive environment for law-abiding Nigerians.”

He highlighted the strong, cooperative relationship between the Nigerian business community and Ghanaian authorities.

Expressing gratitude to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for dispatching a special envoy, led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, to engage with Ghanaian officials, Nnaji also commended Ghanaian President John Mahama for his ongoing support. “Both governments are addressing the situation to strengthen bilateral ties,” he affirmed.

Urging calm, Nnaji called on Nigerians, particularly traders, to avoid escalating tensions or spreading misinformation.

“We must prevent a repeat of historical tensions like the 1983 Aliens Repatriation Order in Ghana or Nigeria’s ‘Ghana Must Go’ protests,” he cautioned, advocating for restraint and unity to maintain the cordial Nigeria-Ghana relationship.
