A key message from the recent RegalStone webinar is the need for Nigerian artists to prioritise and conquer the domestic market before rushing to global stages.

Following the release of the Basslines to Billions Report, Obi Asika, Director-General of the NCAC, while speaking at the webinar, highlighted the growing tendency of artists to seek international recognition before establishing success at home. Artistes should not overlook Nigeria, even as they pursue the biggest platforms in the world. A strong local foundation is essential for sustainable global success.

The importance of the domestic market is reinforced by the challenges and successes of local touring. Davido’s ongoing 5ive Alive tour has drawn massive crowds, showing that there is significant demand for homegrown experiences.

While domestic touring presents logistical difficulties, such as poor roads and security concerns, Asika described it as the backbone of music and a critical part of building an artist’s brand. It is on the road, engaging with local fans, that an artist truly builds their identity.

Neglecting Nigeria leaves both money and momentum untapped. The country has venues, stadiums, fans, and a strong appetite for domestic touring and merchandise. Ultimately, it is the community that propels an artist to stardom, not the government or an immediate international deal. The advice to artists is straightforward: get out there, get involved, and build a network.
