Nigerian troops eliminate terrorists, nab 85 suspects, free 66 hostages in August

Defence Headquarters announced that Nigerian Armed Forces eliminated numerous terrorists, apprehended 85 suspects, and rescued 66 kidnap victims across various operations in August.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, shared these updates during a Thursday briefing in Abuja.

In the North East, Operation Hadin Kai troops neutralized scores of Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters and arrested 15 individuals, including 13 collaborators, a gunrunner, and a drug peddler, while freeing eight hostages.

Kangye noted, “Our forces in the North East have significantly disrupted terrorist activities, ensuring the rescue of vulnerable citizens.”

In the North West, operations in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna, Kebbi, and Katsina States led to the elimination of terrorists, the arrest of 23 suspects, and the rescue of 24 kidnap victims.

In the North Central region, Operation Enduring Peace resulted in the deaths of several terrorists, the arrest of seven criminals, and the rescue of two hostages.

Kangye highlighted a significant achievement, stating, “In Bassa LGA, troops apprehended a suspect carrying N3 million in ransom cash.”

Additionally, Operation Whirl Stroke in Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Kogi, and the FCT detained nine extremists and liberated 13 hostages. Kangye emphasized the broader impact, saying, “Our joint operations recovered substantial arms, ammunition, vehicles, motorcycles, and explosives, weakening criminal networks nationwide.”

He underscored the military’s commitment, stating, “Troops remain dedicated to neutralizing threats, restoring stability, and protecting citizens’ lives and property across all theatres of operation.”
