NPFL: Rivers United return to the top, pressure mounts on Rangers

Rivers United have surged back to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League standings following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Plateau United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

The decisive moment came early in the encounter when striker Wisdom Samuel found the back of the net in the 11th minute, calmly finishing to give the hosts a lead they would protect for the remainder of the match. Rivers United maintained composure throughout the game, showing defensive discipline and tactical organisation to keep Plateau United at bay.

Under the guidance of head coach Finidi George, Rivers United now sit comfortably at the summit with 58 points from 34 matches, strengthening their push for the league title as the season approaches its decisive stage.

Meanwhile, second-placed Rangers International missed an opportunity to reclaim top position after they were held to a goalless draw by Niger Tornadoes at the Bako Kotangora Stadium in Minna. Despite dominating spells of the match, Rangers were unable to break down a resilient Tornadoes defence, leaving them on 56 points and two behind the leaders.

In another standout fixture, Wikki Tourists recorded the only away win of the day, edging past Bayelsa United 1-0 at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa. Midfielder Imamu Bala emerged as the hero for the visitors, striking in the 67th minute to seal a vital three points that could prove crucial in their fight to avoid relegation.

Elsewhere across the league, several matches produced mixed outcomes. Shooting Stars SC were held to a 0-0 draw by Kwara United, while Barau FC secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Remo Stars. Former champions Enyimba FC delivered a dominant performance, thrashing Katsina United 3-0 to boost their position on the table.

In other fixtures, Ikorodu City recorded an emphatic 3-0 win against Kano Pillars, while Kun Khalifat also impressed with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Wolves, underlining the competitive nature of the league as teams battle for survival and continental qualification spots.

With only a few rounds left in the season, the title race in the NPFL remains finely poised.

Rivers United’s return to the summit adds fresh intensity to the competition, while teams across the table continue to fight for glory, survival, and pride in one of Africa’s most unpredictable domestic leagues.
