Our region at risk of ruin, collapse – N’Governors warn

By Obasola Olatunde

Northern governors on Monday warned that the region was on the brink of losing its future to escalating insecurity and worsening poverty calling for immediate and decisive action to avert the looming crisis.

Speaking at a joint meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council in Kaduna, Chairman of the Forum and Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, said the North now faces “a grim reality” of terrorism, banditry and social decay that threatens its very survival.

The two-day meeting, attended by 19 governors, traditional rulers, security chiefs and civil society leaders, was described as a last ditch push for a coordinated regional security response.

Yahaya said future generations would judge today’s leaders not by infrastructure projects but by whether they restore a North “our children can truly call home.” He commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as strong leadership in ongoing rescue efforts for abducted pupils, while condoling families of victims in Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Kano, Niger, Sokoto, Borno and Yobe states.

Warning that insecurity “spares no one,” the governor urged northern leaders to drop partisan battles and unite against a crisis fuelled by underdevelopment, illiteracy, mismanaged resources, climate pressures and millions of out-of-school children.

The meeting reaffirmed the Forum’s May 10, 2025 position calling for state police as a “critical and effective mechanism” for tackling current realities, urging the National Assembly to accelerate constitutional amendments.

Traditional rulers were tasked to use their moral authority as stabilisers, while religious leaders were cautioned against incendiary sermons. Security agencies were encouraged to sustain proactive surveillance, and the judiciary was urged to ensure swift justice delivery.

In a joint declaration, the Governors pledged closer collaboration with the Federal Government under Tinubu to “turn the tide” and restore peace and stability in the region.
