During the hearing of Nnamdi Kanu’s case, Mike Ozekhome, the senior counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), expressed his concerns to the Supreme Court that his client may die in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Ozekhome informed the court that Kanu is very ill and requires surgery, but the DSS has refused to release him for treatment.

He pleaded with the court to transfer Kanu from DSS custody to Kuje correctional centre so that he can receive the necessary medical attention.

Ozekhome expressed his fear that Kanu may die in DSS custody, stating that “dead bodies are not prosecuted.”

“My Lords, Nnamdi Kanu is sick, he has been approved for surgery but they have refused to release him for treatment.

“We are pleading for him to be transferred from DSS custody to Kuje correctional centre so that he can begin treatment like others.

“He’s getting really sick, I’m scared he may die in the custody of DSS. Dead bodies are not prosecuted,” BBC News Pidgin quoted Ozekhome as saying.

In response, the Supreme Court offered reassurance that Kanu will not die in detention and that God will keep him alive.
