The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum convened its 7th strategic meeting in Gusau, Zamfara State, on Saturday, August 23, 2025, to address critical national and party issues, but the absence of Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu State and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State raised questions among party faithful.
Hosted by Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, the closed-door meeting saw the attendance of Governors Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Duoye Diri (Bayelsa), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba).
The meeting, held at the Government House in Gusau, focused on preparations for the PDP’s National Convention scheduled for November 15-16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Key agenda items included reports from the National Zoning Committee, chaired by Governor Diri, and the PDP Constitution Review Committee, as well as updates from the National Executive Committee (NEC).
The governors also deliberated on the recently conducted bye-elections and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside a memo from the National Legislative Assembly caucus.
While no official reason was provided for the absence of Mbah and Mutfwang as of the time of reporting, their non-attendance comes amid speculations about internal rifts within the PDP and potential defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Earlier reports in May 2025 suggested that Mbah and Mutfwang were among governors rumored to be considering a move to the APC, though both have publicly reaffirmed their loyalty to the PDP.
Governor Lawal’s media aide, Mustafa Kaura, had previously stated that Lawal would remain in the PDP, emphasizing his commitment to the party that brought him to power in 2023.
The PDP has been grappling with internal crises since the 2023 general elections, with notable defections, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Vice-Presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa to the APC in April 2025.
Despite these challenges, the PDP Governors’ Forum has reiterated its commitment to party unity and rejected coalition or merger talks, as resolved in their April 2025 meeting in Ibadan.
Governor Lawal, hosting his counterparts, welcomed the governors with a dinner on Friday night before the strategic discussions commenced.
“This meeting is an opportunity to strengthen our party’s unity and strategize for the future,” Lawal said, emphasizing the PDP’s role in addressing national issues and preparing for the 2027 elections.
The absence of Mbah and Mutfwang has fueled online discussions, with some users speculating about underlying tensions or logistical issues.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to finalize zoning arrangements and ensure a transparent National Convention to elect new members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
