The Pentagon is reportedly preparing to award SpaceX a $2 billion contract to help develop a new satellite-based defense system dubbed the “Golden Dome,” according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The deal will see SpaceX design and deploy up to 600 satellites capable of tracking missiles and aircraft in real time, forming a critical part of the United States’ next-generation anti-missile shield.
The proposed “Golden Dome” is part of President Donald Trump’s defense initiative, unveiled in May, which aims to create an advanced interception network that can neutralize incoming missile threats before they reach their targets. The concept mirrors Israel’s successful Iron Dome system but on a much larger, space-based scale.

While the Pentagon has not publicly disclosed details about the project, reports suggest the “Golden Dome” will involve several defense and tech contractors, including Anduril Industries and Palantir Technologies, both of which are expected to contribute to the system’s AI, data, and surveillance infrastructure.
If confirmed, the deal would mark one of SpaceX’s largest defense contracts to date, further strengthening its strategic ties with the Pentagon following previous collaborations under the Space Development Agency (SDA) and National Security Space Launch (NSSL) programs.
