A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has described Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party as the only politician with traction across Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Fayose said all other politicians in the country are only filling the gaps.
Fayose’s description of Obi comes on the heels of the numerous defections which has hit his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to the former governor, he had also predicted some of the things happening within the PDP.
He said, “I spoke to you about all these happenings in PDP two years ago, that day, the same way you were criticising me.”
He also debunking claims in some political quarters that he (Fayose) was seeking relevance with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
The former Ekiti State governor said he is not hungry for any form of political appointment as he is comfortable living a simple life.
“Today, I welcome your criticism, have you seen me taking any appointment from the APC? Have you seen me?
“Asiwaju asked me, Oshoko, what do we give you? I said nothing, sir. I am 65, I’d rather be at home, being more responsible and doing other things that I need to do.
“I’ve served well, two-time governor and I did well, let tomorrow hold itself. I am not hobnobbing with APC but I have been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time and that is the truth,” Fayose stated.
Speaking further on the forthcoming 2027 general election, the former governor said he is yet to see any politician who has the popularity needed to defeat President Tinubu.
“Tell me who would defeat APC, you know the only opposition that I know in Nigeria? Let me tell you now, the only opposition; I didn’t say the opposition can win Asiwaju oo!
“The only opposition, the only person that still has traction is Obi. No other one oo!” he noted.
When asked whether former president Goodluck Jonathan, ex-minister Rotimi Amaechi had the traction needed to go into the presidential race with President Bola Tinubu, Fayose said, “I have said it generally, only Obi and that has answered the question.”
“The only voice that has traction, despite not being in government is Obi and I give it to him.
“But let me tell you, sir, all others are filling the gaps?” Fayose added.
