The family of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has been thrown into mourning following the death of their daughter, Ruth Otabor, barely two weeks after her involvement in a Dangote truck accident.
A statement issued on Sunday by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on behalf of the family confirmed that Ruth passed away in the early hours of today (August 31).
“With a heavy heart, the family regrets to announce the passing on to the glory of their daughter, sister, and mother on this 31st Day of August, 2025 at about 06:30Hrs,” the statement read.
The family added that they are devastated by the tragedy and have requested privacy to grieve, noting that details of Ruth’s funeral arrangements will be made public at a later date.
Ruth’s death comes just weeks after she was hit by a heavy-duty truck linked to Dangote Group near Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, on August 13.
Eyewitnesses said the truck crushed her leg before it was eventually stopped by a bystander.
The incident occurred six days after Ruth graduated from Auchi Polytechnic. She later underwent an emergency leg amputation at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State, in an attempt to save her life.
The accident sparked outrage after Phyna accused the Dangote Group of attempting to shield its driver.
In a series of social media posts, the reality TV star alleged that police officers removed the truck’s licence plate at the company’s instruction. She further revealed that the said driver had no driver’s license.
“Na money you get, you no be God. But my God is bigger. Enough is enough,” she wrote on Instagram, insisting that her family demanded justice.
In response to the incident, Dangote Group admitted that one of its trucks was involved in the accident.
In a statement on August 15, the company said senior officials had visited the hospital where Ruth was receiving treatment and pledged to cover her medical expenses and provide compensation.
“Following the recent road accident in Auchi, Edo State, involving one of our trucks, which sadly resulted in injury to Mrs. Ruth Otabor, senior officials from Dangote Cement Plc, together with our Insurance team, promptly visited the scene, engaged with law enforcement authorities, and visited the victim and her family… We are ensuring full support for Mrs. Otabor, including comprehensive medical care and appropriate compensation,” the company stated.
Fans of Phyna, who won the “Level Up” edition of Big Brother Naija in 2022, flooded her page to console her.
