The Chairman of the Bokkos local government area of Plateau State, Amalau Samuel Amalau has raised an alarm over renewed attacks by suspected militias in the council, which have led to the killing of scores of people in the past two months.
Amalau who cried out over what he described as a systematic and orchestrated genocide against his people, called on the state government and security agencies to put up measures to halt the wave of killings.
He also called on the Nigerian Army, Police, Civil Defence, and community-based security operatives, to act decisively in neutralizing the threats posed by the criminal militias.
Amalau emphasized the need for intelligence gathering, rapid response, and deployment of more personnel to the vulnerable areas to forestall further attacks
In a statement he signed on Thursday and made available to Ripples Nigeria, the council boss condemned the coordinated and brazen attacks on communities in the council, especially in Mushere Chiefdom, stressing that they were barbaric, inhuman, and a direct threat to peace and coexistence.
He cited an attack last Sunday where a widow was killed while several homes, farmlands, and properties were destroyed, which he described as unnecessary and uncalled for.
“According to witnesses, in the attack, over 500 armed Fulani militias descended upon the community in a coordinated onslaught, resulting in widespread destruction of lives and property,” Amalau said.
While expressing deep concern and sorrow over the recurring attacks, the chairman lamented the loss of innocent lives and the growing sense of fear and displacement among residents.
“This is not just an attack on Mushere, it is an attack on the soul of Bokkos. We cannot continue to watch our people be slaughtered and their livelihoods destroyed in broad daylight. Enough is enough,” he said.
