August 02, (THEWILL) — Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested two suspected cultists and recovered a firearm, ammunition, and other incriminating items during a targeted raid on a hotel in Ikot Udota, Eket Local Government Area.
The operation, which took place on Thursday, July 31, at about 2:30 p.m., was based on credible intelligence suggesting that expelled students and dropouts from a yet-to-be-disclosed institution had formed gangs and were involved in a range of illicit activities, including extortion, rape, and cybercrime.
According to a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the suspects arrested during the raid are Uwemedimo Michael Udah, 29, from Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, and Prince Emmanuel Amasi-Tito, 32, from Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State.
Items recovered during the operation include one English Beretta pistol with three rounds of 9mm live ammunition, one laptop, two Android phones, one MTN internet router, a mixture of suspected drug concoctions, and three copies of a power-of-attorney, suspected to be stolen.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the criminal ring is allegedly led by Etieno Gideon James, and another individual identified only as “Ale”, who are currently on the run. The police said efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
“The successful arrest underscores the Command’s unwavering commitment to ridding the state of criminal elements and ensuring the safety and security of residents”, DSP John stated.
The Akwa Ibom Police Command also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies promptly.
