Police assure safety as Oworonshoki youths threaten to block Third Mainland Bridge

A group of youths in Oworonshoki has threatened to embark on
a protest at the Third Mainland Bridge on Monday over the recent demolition of
structures in the waterside Lagos community.

“Please for those that have planned to work tomorrow morning
(Monday 27th October, 2025) be informed that you should plan your route inward
island and inward mainland because Oworonshoki youths are planning to lockdown
the THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE in respect to the protest against the Demolition
going on In Oworonshoki community. Please be guided,” the notice from the group
reads.

Over the weekend, videos surfaced on social media showing
residents of Precious Seed community in Oworonshoki scampering for safety after
teargas canisters were shot by security operatives attached to officials of the
Lagos government.

The officials were said to have arrived at the community
with bulldozers to continue the demolition of structures.

On Friday, the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA)
began paying compensation to affected property owners in Oworonshoki.

The state government attributed the demolition to its urban
regeneration project.

In September, residents of the community protested at the
Third Mainland Bridge over the demolitions.

POLICE ASSURE RESIDENTS OF SECURITY

Reacting to the planned protest, the police command in Lagos
assured commuters that officers have been deployed to prevent any form of
obstruction or breach of the peace.

In a statement, Abimbola Adebisi, Lagos police spokesperson,
asked residents to proceed with their lawful activities without fear.

“The Lagos State Police Command is aware of information
circulating regarding a planned disruption on the Third Mainland Bridge by some
youths in the Oworonshoki area,” the statement reads.

“The Command wishes to assure the public that adequate
security measures have been put in place to maintain law and order across the
state.

“Our officers are fully deployed to ensure the safety of all
road users and to prevent any form of obstruction or breach of the peace.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to go about
their lawful activities without fear and to cooperate with security personnel
carrying out their duties.”
