Pressure mounts as Pastor Chris Okafor submits to police investigation

Founder and Senior Pastor of Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, Chris Okafor, has surrendered to the Lagos State Police Command amid multiple allegations of rape and other offences authorities say could threaten public order.

Police confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that Okafor presented himself to investigators after initially failing to honour an invitation from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti. Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed that Okafor was summoned on Sunday but failed to appear on Monday, prompting an arrest directive.

Following the order, Okafor reported himself to the police on Tuesday. The case has since been transferred to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing Zone 2, Sylvester Alabi, for further investigation. According to CP Jimoh, the matter had already been under investigation at Zone 2 for several weeks before being temporarily handled by SCID due to growing public attention.

Police authorities said complaints from alleged victims circulating widely on social media accelerated the investigation, stressing that ignoring such allegations could undermine law and order.

Public attention intensified in December 2025 after multiple accusations surfaced online. Nollywood actress Doris Ogala alleged that Okafor maintained a long-term s3xual relationship with her from 2017, made unfulfilled marriage promises, shared explicit materials, and contributed to the collapse of her former marriage.

Amid the backlash, Okafor reportedly issued a public apology to his congregation on December 28, 2025, kneeling during a church service to seek forgiveness. He has since stepped aside from his pastoral responsibilities.

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria is said to be reviewing the allegations and may initiate disciplinary measures, while police say protective arrangements have been put in place for the alleged victims as investigations continue.
