Real Madrid fail to win again, held by Girona in La Liga

Real Madrid surrendered a goal lead to settle for a 1-1 draw with Girona at the Santiago Bernabeu on Friday night.

The Spanish La Liga match, played earlier for Real to have more recovery time for their Germany trip to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie, did not go according to plan for Alvaro Arbeloa’s side despite producing 22 shots in a dominant display.

Federico Valverde scored for Madrid but Thomas Lemar replied for Girona with both goals coming in the second half.

Despite felding their strongest lineup from the start, Real Madrid struggled to breakdown Girona with a deep-seated defence, and the visitors came closest to scoring toward the end of the half. Valverde however put Real Madrid ahead six minutes into the second half with a powerful shot from just outside the penalty area that slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, for his eighth goal in nine matches in all competitions.

However, Real Madrid continued a streak of conceding goals, with Lemar’s shot into the far corner restoring parity, the home side failing to keep a clean sheet for the seventh consecutive match. Real Madrid have only kept one clean sheet in 2026.

Girona held on to frustrate Real Madrid, and home fans booed the team at the end of the stalemate that brings Los Merengues’ winless run to three matches, and further makes their La Liga title prospect slimmer.

Real Madrid are six points adrift of first-placed Barcelona who face Espanyol in the Catalan derby on Saturday.
