The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review will, on Monday, October 6, 2025, hold a crucial meeting with leaders of registered political parties as part of its ongoing effort to amend the 1999 Constitution.
The committee, chaired by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, has highlighted several priority areas for possible amendment, including the creation of state police, local government autonomy, devolution of powers, judicial and electoral reforms, and special seats for women.
In recent weeks, the committee embarked on a nationwide consultation, touring all six geopolitical zones to gather input from stakeholders. A final draft of the proposed amendments is expected to be presented to the National Assembly in December for consideration and adoption.
House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, said in a statement on Sunday that the session with political parties “will feature deliberations on priority areas such as special seats for women, judicial and electoral reforms, independent candidacy, local government reforms, state policing, human rights, and justice.”
He added that the engagement will allow political parties “to make inputs, share perspectives, and contribute meaningfully to discussions on key national issues.”
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Kalu described political parties as central to the success of the exercise. “Political parties remain the engine room of our democracy, and their active participation in this consultation is vital to achieving constitutional amendments that are inclusive, credible, and reflective of the collective aspirations of Nigerians,” he said.
According to the House, a summarised compendium of the bills under consideration has been prepared to guide discussions during the engagement.
