Reps disown minority caucus report on tax laws

The House of Representatives has dismissed an interim report by an ad hoc committee set up by the Minority Caucus of the House to review the enacted tax laws, stating that the body lacks parliamentary authority and institutional recognition.

In a statement on Sunday, the House clarified that while political caucuses are free to express dissenting views, engage in advocacy and raise public concerns, they do not have the constitutional or procedural powers to constitute committees of the House.

The statement signed by the spokesperson of the House, Akin Rotimi, said under its Standing Orders (Eleventh Edition), only the House sitting in plenary or the Speaker can validly constitute an ad-hoc committee with parliamentary status.

The statement said any committee set up outside these procedures is informal, non-binding and has no investigative, oversight, or summons powers, stressing that reports emanating from such bodies cannot be presented to the House or form part of its official legislative record.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly is expected to resume plenary on Tuesday for legislative activities barring any last-minute change.

Among the top issues expected to gain the attention of the lawmakers as they return from recess are voting on the constitution amendment bills, passage of the 2025 Electoral Amendment Bill by the Senate, and resolving controversies surrounding tax laws.
