Rivers LG poll: Tinubu, Ibas, RSIEC dragged to court

Rivers LG poll: Tinubu, Ibas, RSIEC dragged to court

President Bola Tinubu and Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, have been dragged to court over the planned Local Government elections in the state.

A legal action was taken against Tinubu and Ibas alongside the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) by individuals opposed to the scheduled August 30, LG polls in the state.

The suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1144/2025 was filed before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

Identifying as indigenes of Rivers State, the plaintiffs questioned the current state of affairs in the state.

According to the plaintiff, Rivers State is not conducive for any form of LG elections as scheduled by RSIEC.

Representing the plaintiff – Fredrick Ededeh, Benita Samuel, Jane Madubuike, Boma Aggo and Comfort Agbom – their counsel, Sunday Ezema filed the suit before the court.

The plaintiffs prayed the court to determine whether the LG election could be lawfully conducted during the period of a state of emergency.

In the suit, the plaintiffs also reminded the court that President Tinubu while declaring the State of Emergency in the state claimed that there was “clear and present danger or imminent breakdown of public order and public safety.

They also said that the president said that the “clear and present danger of the looming crises” in the state had affected good governance, peace, security and order.
