Riyadh 2025: Team Nigeria’s Medals Hit 20 With Wrestling Gold, Silver Wins

Nigeria’s wrestlers have significantly boosted Team Nigeria’s medal count at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, securing both gold and silver medals on Wednesday evening.

Christianah Ogunsanya clinched gold in the Women’s Freestyle 53kg category, while Missinnei Mercy Genesis achieved a silver medal in the Women’s Freestyle 50kg division.

These achievements bring Team Nigeria’s total medal tally to 20, comprised of seven gold, nine silver, and four bronze medals.

In her final bout, Ogunsanya triumphed over Shokhida Akhmedova of Uzbekistan with a decisive score of 11-1 to claim the gold.

Also, Genesis finished her competition with a silver after losing her final match to Uzbekistan’s Aktenge Keunjaeva, who won 5-1.

In an interview with LEADERSHIP following her victory, Ogunsanya expressed satisfaction and gratitude towards her coach and teammates for their support.

“I feel fulfilled and blessed. I am thankful for the hard work and to my coach, as well as my teammates. Everything worked well for me. As I mentioned earlier, thanks to my coach. He monitors everything we do, helping us move swiftly on the mats. I believe in his training, and he believes in us,” she said.

Looking ahead, she said, “Now we must prepare for the world championships next year. Our dream is to stand on the podium and aim for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.”

Team Nigeria’s wrestling coach, Purity Aku, reflected on the athletes’ achievements. “My aim was to secure two golds today and prepare for two more golds tomorrow. It is unfortunate that we only won one gold, but we must thank God for our success.”

“Tomorrow, we will focus on our finishing techniques. In my coaching, I prefer not to put my athletes under pressure, as that only leads to mistakes. By the grace of God, Kolawole is currently ranked fifth in the world, and we have others placed in the top rankings. This is the right time for us to show that we are ready.

“Damilola is also a promising young athlete; she is strong, and I am optimistic that tomorrow will be a successful day for her and the team,” he concluded.
