Former President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will emerge stronger after its national convention scheduled for March 29, 2026.
Naija News reports that the PDP faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has scheduled its National Convention for March 29th.
Speaking in an interview with LEADERSHIP on Thursday, Saraki dismissed suggestions that the former ruling party had lost relevance.
The former Kwara State governor said the PDP remains deeply rooted in the minds of Nigerians despite the internal crisis currently affecting the party.
According to him, the opposition party continues to maintain strong support across the country.
“It’s a party that is there in the minds of people. Go to villages, go to towns across the country. It’s not something you can wipe out,” he said.
“Crises like this cannot wipe out the party. That’s why sometimes you hear commentators say PDP is dead. That is not correct because when you go around the states today and talk to people, the main opposition party that exists is PDP.”
Saraki acknowledged that the party has faced internal disagreements but insisted that leaders are committed to resolving the issues.
He said stakeholders recognise the responsibility of preserving the party and ensuring unity.
“I believe that a lot of us as leaders have that responsibility that no matter how difficult it appears, we will find a solution,” he said.
Saraki explained that the upcoming convention is expected to resolve many of the lingering disputes within the party.
He admitted that mistakes made during the earlier Ibadan convention contributed to the legal battles currently affecting the party.
“Unfortunately, we made mistakes there, and that led us to the courts. Now we have to come out of the courts and go back to the table,” he said.
The former Senate President added that party leaders are working toward ensuring that the PDP remains competitive ahead of the 2027 general elections .
“Over the next few days, we want to return to the table and move towards the convention. Hopefully, after the convention, we will come together and do the most important thing Nigerians want to see — that PDP is on the ballot paper in 2027,” he said.
