Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Saturday expressed strong support for President Donald Trump’s decision to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) a classification reserved for nations that engage in or tolerate severe violations of religious freedom.
In an official statement, Sen. Cruz said he was “deeply gratified” by the president’s determination, describing it as a vital measure in confronting religious persecution, particularly against Christians in Nigeria.
“I have fought for years to counter the slaughter and persecution of Christians in Nigeria,” Cruz stated. “Earlier this year, I introduced legislation that will lock in the designation made today.”

The senator emphasized that the designation marks “a critical step in holding accountable and changing the behavior of Nigerian officials who have facilitated and created an environment conducive to the outrages in Nigeria.” He noted that his proposed legislation seeks to build upon the administration’s action by implementing further measures, including sanctions targeting individuals responsible for enforcing blasphemy and sharia laws.
Cruz reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with both the administration and his colleagues in Congress to advance his bill and ensure that the United States continues to uphold international religious freedom standards.
“Today’s decision by President Trump is a great one,” Cruz concluded, “and I thank him for his strong leadership.”
