The Senate Committee on Appropriation, led by Senator Solomon Adeola, has clarified the 2026 budget process, emphasizing fiscal discipline and transparency.

While briefing journalists at National Assembly on Tuesday, he said: “The 2026 budget stands at ₦58.472 trillion, comprising ₦4.097 trillion for statutory transfers, ₦15.909 trillion for debt service, ₦15.252 trillion for recurrent expenditure, and ₦23.214 trillion for capital projects.

“The budget prioritizes macroeconomic stability, infrastructure development, job creation, and human capital strengthening, and revenue constraints led to extending the 2025 budget by three months to March 31, 2026, ensuring project continuity.

“Starting 2026, Nigeria will adopt a single budget approach, abandoning multiple budgets, and 70% of 2025’s capital budget was shifted to 2026, addressing revenue shortfalls. The Senate has passed the 2026 Appropriation Bill for second reading, referring it to the Appropriations Committee.”

He continued: “₦15.909 trillion is allocated for debt servicing, reflecting existing obligations as key sectors include security (₦5.41 trillion), infrastructure (₦3.56 trillion), education (₦3.52 trillion), and healthcare (₦2.48 trillion).”

Informing that government aims to improve revenue mobilization, reduce borrowing, and ensure transparent budget implementation, he adds that the 2026 budget is expected to be passed into law by February-March 2026.

While adding that the budget aims to consolidate economic reforms, boost growth, and ensure fiscal discipline, the chairman however says that President Tinubu emphasizes modernizing the Armed Forces, intelligence-driven policing, and community-based peacebuilding.
