March 12, (THEWILL) — Service chiefs on Thursday assured President Bola Tinubu that Nigeria is making progress in the fight against terrorism, pledging to sustain military offensives against insurgent groups across the country.
The assurance followed a high-level security meeting convened by the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where service chiefs and top defence officials reviewed the country’s security situation amid a recent surge in insurgent attacks.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Gwabin Musa, said the service chiefs updated the President on developments in the theatre of operations and ongoing efforts to counter terrorism.
“The meeting is primarily for us to review ongoing events. We came here to brief the President on the current situation on the ground. There have been a series of attacks, and the security forces have risen to the occasion. Our goal is to give the President a clearer understanding of what is happening,” Musa said.
He explained that the security chiefs also considered it necessary to clarify public perceptions regarding the current security situation.
“Media interpretations are not always direct. We felt we should put the record straight, which we have done, and we are glad that Mr. President continues to support the Armed Forces and other security agencies in combating insurgency,” he added.
Musa appealed to Nigerians not to be discouraged by reports of attacks, assuring them that the military was recording significant successes against terrorist groups.
“Do not get discouraged. Sometimes, when you hear news of attacks, you may think the situation is worse than it really is. It is far from that. The terrorists are taking more casualties, and their commanders are being killed. While we have lost courageous officers and men, regrettably, we want to assure Nigerians of our commitment to ensuring their safety and security,” he said.
The defence chief disclosed that the Armed Forces had recently adjusted operational strategies, resulting in the recapture of key locations, the neutralisation of terrorist commanders, and the recovery of weapons and other assets.
“We have adjusted our strategies over the past few days, taken over key locations, neutralised commanders, and recovered assets. Mr. President has approved additional equipment to strengthen our capabilities, and we are confident of victory,” Musa stated.
He noted that the ongoing Ramadan sometimes presents operational challenges, as terrorist groups tend to intensify their activities during the period.
Despite this, he said security forces remain resolute in sustaining the offensive against insurgents.
“All members of the security forces are committed to assuring Nigerians and the President that we are on track and will succeed,” Musa said.
