Seyi Law Apologizes Over ‘Safer Nigeria’ Remark

ABUJA – Popular Nigerian comedian Seyi Law has apologized for claiming that Nigeria is safer now than it was a decade ago, acknowledging that his comment was insensitive to victims of kidnapping and the country’s ongoing insecurity challenges.

In a video shared on his social media platforms that is currently trending, the pro-Bola Tinubu entertainer addressed the backlash over his controversial remark.

During his appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, published on Monday, Seyi Law stated that Nigeria is safer now than it was 10 years ago.

The comment quickly went viral and sparked widespread criticism online.

His statement drew anger on social media and during call-in programs on some local radio stations in Abuja, where many listeners expressed disappointment and frustration.

In the trending video, Seyi Law acknowledged the hurt caused by his words, particularly to those who have directly suffered from kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes.

“I’m sorry for saying Nigeria is safer now than 10 years ago,” he said.

“I realize that the statement came off as insensitive to people who have lost loved ones or who are currently going through painful experiences due to insecurity.”

He clarified that his statement reflected his personal perspective and some statistics he had considered, but admitted that such comparisons could downplay the real-life suffering of many Nigerians.

He also recognized that insecurity remains a serious challenge across the country and expressed heartfelt sympathy for victims and their families.

He stressed that his intention was never to dismiss their pain but to engage in conversations about national development and governance.

His apology is expected to ease the anger of those offended by his earlier remark.

A known supporter of President Tinubu, Seyi has often shared his views on social and political issues, attracting both praise and criticism.

His latest apology appears aimed at mitigating public backlash and showing empathy amid ongoing debates about Nigeria’s security situation.
