I went to their house as a house help. Life was beating me up and down with little to nothing in my name. My rent was almost due but those who owed me saw me coming and they ran away. Then Aunt Samantha came home one night and told me she has a friend who needs a house help; “If you want it, I can take you to her house tomorrow.”

She told me they would accommodate me, give me food to eat and pay me at the end of the month. These arrangements solved half of my life’s problem so I said yes. The next morning, we set off to meet my new employers. Once we met my madam, I knew she was going to give me trouble. She told my aunt Samantha, “She’s too old. I want a young lady I can control. This one can beat me.”

Before Aunt Samantha would say anything, I said, “Please, I’m not even strong. I’m humble. I will never exchange words with you. You’re my madam, how can I challenge you? I need this.”
She and my aunt Samantha went to talk on the side and left me standing there alone. Aunt Samantha came first and warned me not to cause any problem. Later my madam also came, took my bag and led me to my room and left me there. I slept like I hadn’t slept in ages. The voices of the children woke me up late in the afternoon. I went to the hall, greeted and started my job officially as the house help.
I didn’t meet the man of the house until a couple of weeks later. When he saw me the first time he mentioned my name. He asked if I’d been well. He also mentioned his name as Ansah and said he would see me around.
Whenever I was alone with my madam, she was very good to me. But whenever her husband was around, she became a beast. She would send me on errands nonstop. Sometimes she would tell me to stay in the children’s room until she needed me or she would send me out of the house every opportunity she got. Luckily for me, her husband didn’t stay in the house often. He would travel for a week or two, come home for a week and go again.
One dawn, I heard them exchanging words. It was so loud I was scared the kids would wake up and see their parents fighting. Soon it turned into a physical fight.
You could hear stamping of feet, items being thrown around and shouting at each other. They came out of their bedroom to the hall and then I heard Ansah scream in pain and after call my name. When I got there, he was there alone with his face covered in blood. He asked me to get him cold water. I helped clean his bloody face while wondering where my madam was.
I asked, “Where is madam?” He said, “You see what she has done to me? You’re my witness.”
My madam was fine. It was her husband who was endangered. I was terrified and prayed it never became a big issue.
From that night, Ansah started confiding in me. He would call me on the phone and ask if madam was home. I would tell him she was always home. He would ask when she came back from work. He would ask if she had been on her phone for long. He would ask many questions I had no answer to. One day he said, “Do you know I like you so much? I’m living with a demon so when I see your face and how respectful you are, it makes me realize how big a mistake it was to marry a woman like her.”
I liked it when he traveled and called me. It made me feel part of the family, especially when he sent me money to get the kids something. He came home one day and didn’t go to work for days. While madam was away, we had our first sex. I liked him but I didn’t think things could get that far. From that day, he started telling me to leave the house. He made a lot of promises like renting a place for me and setting me up and all but I didn’t trust him so I stayed.
We continued doing it secretly when it was favorable. It wasn’t favorable often but once we got the opportunity, we utilized every bit of it until I found out that I was pregnant. I felt my world whirling before my very eyes. “Eiii, how do I explain this?”
I knew what he would say if I told him I was pregnant so I decided to keep it from him but a few days later, we had an opportunity to do the do.
While he was on top working out his happiness, I told him I was pregnant. I thought he would stop out of shock. He kept going and going while smiling. “You’re joking, right?” I answered, “How can I joke with something like this?” He said, “Then you’ll have my third child. Now, don’t say anything again.”
After the action, he walked out of the room quietly without discussing what I told him. It took him two days to say anything about it. He told me he was getting accommodation out of town so I should start thinking of what I wanted to do with my life. I said I would want to start a store for the meantime.
I was scared the signs were going to show. Even when I was tired and experiencing pregnancy symptoms, I still stayed active so my madam wouldn’t suspect anything. Ansah came home and told me to get ready to leave. When madam went to work, he asked me to pack my things and leave with him. He drove me to where he had rented a room for me and took me in. He gave me the keys and said, “I’ll tell her you ran away so you don’t need to come back.”
I wanted to part on good terms. My madam wasn’t good to me but I wasn’t a saint either but Ansah wouldn’t let me. When Madam came home and I wasn’t there, she called me on the phone shouting and insulting me and asking how dare I leave the house without her consent. She made things easier. I told her, “I’ve packed my things. I’m not coming back.” The next call came from Aunt Samantha. She understood me when I said I was tired of my madam but she said, “At least, you should have told her something before leaving. That wasn’t right.”
I apologized but it didn’t change anything. Ansah got me a shop not too far from where he rented for me. He stocked the shop and gave me the keys. From there, anytime he was in town, he would be at my place, sometimes spend two days with me before going home. He would come to me before he traveled. I didn’t expect anything from him. I didn’t think he owed me anything. Whatever he gave or did was enough for me. I didn’t ask about our future or what was happening in his marriage. We took it a day at a time until I delivered.
When I was in labor, he was by my side. When I was discharged, he took me home. He didn’t attend the naming ceremony because of Aunt Samantha but he paid for everything. My mom and dad know my husband is abroad. I made Ansah call them when he traveled abroad so they believe he would one day come and marry me.
My son is currently three years old. Ansah is still here playing the perfect dad role in his life. I know one day, this will come to an end but I don’t know when that day is coming or what will make it come and looking at the way he makes plans for our tomorrow, it doesn’t look like he’s going to leave anytime soon.
Three Months After Our Breakup, He Got Married
Sometimes the future scares me. Sometimes, the guilt drums in my head until it makes my head ache. I want him to leave and at the same time want him to stay. He looks happy when he’s here with us. He laughs and sleeps deeply like he’s not committing a sin so I guess he’s content. I’m content but in fear that one day, he’ll walk out of this door and not come again. He still wants his marriage and wants us. Men do crazy things just to feed their manliness and maybe, this is one of those crazy things. I’ll leave everything to time and tide. Whatever may come will meet me ready.
