KiD X Calls Out ‘Uncultural’ Moves In SA Hip Hop After Zingah & K.Keed Refused To Freestyle. South African rapper KiD X has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding freestyling culture in SA Hip Hop, following Zingah’s refusal to freestyle on DJ Speedsta’s 5FM Hip Hop Night.

During an interview on 5FM’s Hip Hop Nights radio show, KiD X was asked to share his thoughts on Zingah’s decision to refuse freestyling: “What was your take on Zingah refusing to freestyle?”
KiD X didn’t hold back. “Uncultural. Very uncultural, so for me, that moment is not separate from uncultural pivotal moments that we have witnessed in Hip Hop that allow space for someone to come and say I can come and play this card.
“Let’s look at Canibus in a battle with Dizaster. He decides I’m pulling out an exam pad, and this is what we’re doing, and he started spitting bars from the exam pad. Let’s look at Drake on the radio freestyle, where he pulls out his phone and says This is what I’m doing right now, I’m opening that portal. Let’s look at the most recent now, J.Cole in a battle, and he decides to pull out. So all of those things, I think, kinda create this weird thing, and they normalise uncultural things being socially acceptable.”
KiD X went on to dissect the essence of freestyle, highlighting its roots. “It’s necessary to also just dissect this freestyle culture and really get to the essence of it. I read an interview by Rakim, who speaks about the history of freestyling.
“Freestyling started with cats coming with their prepared stuff. The evolution of that is now cats feeling like, yoh forget your written stuff, we’re gonna show you guys that we’re gonna do it right here, right now. So I think where we are right now is obviously people kinda wanna have the debate about, ‘but it’s not really a freestyle if it has a verse from someone.’ But I think if we listen to the people who were there when it actually began, I think we will have to take a hard look at that.”
