South-Africa: Lesufi suspends Gauteng Health head over Tembisa hospital report

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has suspended the head of the Department of Health and Wellness, Lesiba Arnold Malotana, with immediate effect, as investigations into large-scale corruption at Tembisa Hospital intensify.

The suspension follows a recent Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report that revealed fraud involving health officials, business syndicates and irregular contracts worth billions.

Lesufi has appointed Dr Darion Barclay as acting head of the department to ensure stability during the investigation.

LESUFI SUSPENDS GAUTENG HEALTH HEAD AS SIU ESPOSES R2 BILLION FRAUD

The SIU’s interim findings connect at least three syndicates to R2 billion in suspicious payments at Tembisa Hospital.

The investigation involves:

207 service providers

4501 purchase orders

The implicated Gauteng Department of Health officials allegedly benefited at least R122 million through irregular procurement. 

The SIU confirmed that the implicated staff range from clerks to senior managers.

It warned that the number could rise as the probe continues.

SUSPENSION TO PROTECT INVESTIGATION AND THE DEPARTMENT

Lesufi says the suspension aims to protect the integrity of both the investigation and the department.

The provincial government also committed to working with the department to act on the SIU’s recommendations.

Barclay, who leads the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, will oversee the Health Department during Malotana’s suspension.

NEXT STEPS AFTER LESUFI SUSPENDS GAUTENG HEALTH HEAD

Additionally, the Premier’s Office will make all performance agreements for Members of the Executive Council public on 16 October 2025.

Lesufi said Barclay will ensure continuity and stability in a critical department.
