South-Africa: ‘My Lord and saviour, Jesus’: Siya Kolisi’s 100th cap speech

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has credited his strong Christian faith to helping him achieve his 100th test cap this weekend.

The 34-year-old celebrated the milestone after South Africa’s momentous 32-17 victory over France at the Stade de France.

The occasion also marked Bok boss Rassie Erasmus’s 50th test cap as head coach.

SIYA KOLISI 100:  PRAISE FOR HIS ‘LORD AND SAVIOUR’

In his post-match interview, Siya Kolisi was asked what his 100th Springbok test cap meant to him.

He said: “I can’t take credit for everything that I have achieved. There have been so many people along the way who have helped me.  Through the toughest of times, my Lord and Saviour Jesus – he’s been there, got to thank him. 

Sporting his signature cross and the name “Jesus” on his wristband, he continued: “I’ve been through so much, but I’ve always had a helper with me. Everything I’ve done is not on my own doing. I’m nothing without the boys here. I’m so grateful for the way they fought”.

Siya Kolisi hoped his humble beginnings in Zwide, filled with poverty, abuse, and a broken family, inspired others.

He continued: “Anybody who grew up in similar circumstances to me, no matter their skin colour or where they are, I just want them to know it’s possible”.

‘SAY YES TO GOD’

Siya Kolisi is known for often speaking about his faith and how it has encouraged him in tough times.

In 2017, Siya addressed HillSong Church to talk about how Christianity was the cornerstone of him being a great leader.

He said, “God chose me in my family to be the one to be the light in the family. I told myself that when I make it, I want to make a difference in people’s lives. And now I have the platform, which is rugb.y
