South-Africa: Police officer shoots brother-in-law after mistaking him for intruder

A 49-year-old police officer is facing a murder charge after she allegedly shot and killed her brother-in-law, believing he was an intruder entering her Groblersdal home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Sergeant Salome Kgoroba, attached to the SAPS Sekhukhune District, briefly appeared in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, said Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba on Thursday.

The officer is accused of fatally shooting her 31-year-old brother-in-law at around 02:00 on 16 November 2025.

The case was postponed to Friday, 21 November, for a formal bail application.

CASE OPEN FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION

Police were first notified when the victim was admitted to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. He was later transferred to Philadelphia Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.

According to preliminary investigations, Kgoroba was asleep when she allegedly heard someone opening her door.

Believing an intruder had entered, she allegedly fired several shots toward the door. It was only afterward, when she checked, that she realised she had shot her brother-in-law. She then transported him to hospital.
