The horrific bus crash near Makhado, Limpopo, that claimed 43 lives in mid October is far from the first time a tragedy of this nature has occurred in South Africa. In 2024 alone, 146 fatalities resulting from bus crashes were recorded – the highest number in a five-year span. A key factor behind this worrying trend is the weak and inconsistent enforcement of the regulatory framework for bus operators. Daily Maverick’s Lerato Mutsila explains.
