Stakeholders brainstorm on transitional justice system in Borno

As part of its efforts to ensure the successful implementation and promotion of Transitional Justice Programme in the North East Nigeria , Allamin Foundation for Peace and Development in collaboration with UKAID have organized a second phase of the North East Transitional Justice Network (NETJUN) coordination meeting on Monday in Maiduguri.

The Executive Director, Allamin Foundation for Peace and Development, Hajiya Hamsatu Allamin, said the meeting was aimed at “mobilizing Borno state stakeholders to develop transitional justice and reconciliation policy recommendations in north east Nigeria”.

Hajiya Allamin , who was represented by The Project Manager/Reintegration Officer, Samuel Orahii, described the theme of meeting: “community peace and security dialogue with service providers”, as apt, adding that it was geared towards ensuring proper implementation of transitional justice on reintegration, reconciliation and deradicalization of Boko Haram insurgency fighters, repentants and victims affected by the conflict.

Orahii added that the objective of the coordination meeting held at F & H Hall Maiduguri on Monday was to look at the key operational areas of activity, composition and leadership as well as the network meetings time frame among others.

The Reintegration Officer also noted that the network meetings was targeted at strengthening resilience and capacity of the stakeholders towards effective implementation and operational framework that will be beneficial and acceptable to all the victims of insurgency.

According to him, the meeting of the transitional justice network Stakeholders was further aimed at collecting suggestions, recommendations, views and opinions of the participating network Stakeholders on how to run the initiated transitional justice network in the North East region properly with articulated, experienced, professional and composed leaders of integrity.

Meanwhile, participants at the end of the meeting resolved that the network meetings should be held monthly to review activities of the transitional justice network implementation process even through visual conference, such as zoom, WhatsApp platform and email addresses.

They also suggested that legal experts and relevant professionals should be engaged in the implementation process as well as the media organizations based on the significant roles they play in the society as informers, educators, mediators, mobilizers and reconciliatory and sharpers of public opinions.

It was further resolved that the transitional justice programme should involved both national and international organizations and relevant government agencies.

For the transitional justice network to be better coordinated and managed, the participants called for better advocacy and engagement with relevant Government agencies, organizations, NGOs, CBOs, community leaders and other stakeholders.

They recommended the involvement and participation of professionals, experts and experienced personnel on transitional justice, especially, experts on reintegration, reconciliation and interventions in order to give out outputs on activities that are desirous .

Involvement of security agencies and para military forces like the military, police, immigration, civil defence, peace corps, vigilante groups and public community policing and others as well as regular conduct of research to periodically review activities of the Transitional justice newton were emphasized .
