March 28, (THEWILL) – Switzerland continued their impressive start to the Euro 2024 qualifiers, securing a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Israel, on Tuesday.
The triumph comes after a convincing 5-0 win against Belarus over the weekend, giving Switzerland a perfect six-point haul from their opening two games in Group I. Ruben Vargas opened the scoring for the hosts just before halftime, with Zeki Amdouni and Silvan Widmer adding two more goals shortly after the break at the Geneva Stadium.
Vargas took advantage of a hesitant Israeli defence to volley the ball into the net for the opening goal in the 39th minute. Amdouni, making his full debut, doubled Switzerland’s lead in the 48th minute after capitalising on a parry by goalkeeper Omri Glazer. Widmer headed home from an inch-perfect pass over the Israeli defence from Denis Zakaria just four minutes later to seal the victory.
Switzerland were awarded a penalty in the 28th minute after Cedric Itten went down under a challenge from Neta Lavi. However, after a lengthy VAR check, the referee, Nikola Dabanovic of Montenegro, overturned his initial decision.
Nevertheless, Switzerland remained dominant throughout the match, showing why they are considered one of the favourites to qualify for Euro 2024.
