Sydney Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest on Terrorism Charges, Home Raided

A man has been charged with a terrorism offence after police analysed phones they seized during a traffic stop in Sydney’s south-west.

During a patrol on December 31, officers conducted a search of a Toyota sedan they had stopped on Dargan Street in Yagoona.

Inside the vehicle, authorities reportedly discovered drugs, cash, and three mobile phones.

The discovery sparked a raid on a home in Bass Hill around 6am yesterday, where police seized more mobile phones, storage devices and a knife. (NSW Police)

The driver, a 31-year-old man, was apprehended and taken to Bankstown Police Station. He faced charges related to supplying illegal drugs, handling crime proceeds below $5000, and operating a vehicle with non-compliant lighting.

Initially denied bail, he appeared in court on January 1 and was subsequently granted conditional bail.

Further investigation of the mobile phones allegedly revealed content linked to violent extremism.

A 31-year-old man was arrested and taken to Bansktown Police Station where he was charged with possessing violent extremist material and possessing or using a prohibited weapon without a permit.

He was refused bail and appeared at Bankstown Local Court yesterday, where he was granted conditional bail to appear back in court on March 3.
