Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations rooted in pan-African solidarity and mutual prosperity as he celebrated Liberia on its 178th Independence Anniversary.

He spoke through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar (OON), who was in Monrovia on Sunday to represent the president.

Ambassador Tuggar joined other dignitaries and heads of delegation from across the continent in honouring Liberia’s long-standing commitment to self-determination and democratic governance.

A statement by his Special Assistant, Alkasim Abdulkadir said in a message delivered on behalf of President Tinubu, the Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations rooted in pan-African solidarity and mutual prosperity.

He praised Liberia’s historic journey of freedom and resilience, describing the nation as a testament to African agency and determination. Tuggar noted that Nigeria and Liberia, as two of Africa’s earliest sovereign states, share a legacy of leadership in regional integration, democratic values, and continental unity.
“On this momentous occasion, I convey warm greetings and felicitations from His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the people of Nigeria.

“President Tinubu reiterates Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to partnering with Liberia through the ECOWAS framework to promote peace, economic cooperation, and collective security that benefit all citizens of our respective nations.

“In Liberia’s darkest hours, when the drums of war drowned out the voices of reason, Nigeria answered the call of brotherhood. Under the banner of ECOWAS, our sons and daughters in uniform soldiers, doctors, and diplomats came not as conquerors but as kins.

“The ECOMOG mission was more than a peacekeeping operation; it was an act of love for a sister nation. Many of our finest never returned home, their lives given so that Liberia might live.

“Today, as we see the fruits of peace in our children in schools, farmers in fields, and entrepreneurs in markets, we honour their sacrifice.

“Liberia and Nigeria are more than neighbours; we are family. The challenges ahead notably;climate change, economic inequality, global instabilityare daunting, but they are no match for the power of a united Africa” he concluded.

This year’s celebration, themed “One People, One Destiny: Healing the Past and Building the Future,” reflected on Liberia’s historical journey—emphasizing the need for introspection, reconciliation, and the forging of a united national identity.

The commemorations underscored Liberia’s potential to rebuild a peaceful and prosperous nation, richly endowed with human capital and natural resources.

Liberia used the occasion to recognize the contribution of ECOWAS Member States, particularly Nigeria, for their critical role in restoring peace during the country’s darkest hours. Nigeria was specially acknowledged for deploying troops and resources to the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), which played a decisive role in ending Liberia’s civil war and securing humanitarian corridors during the conflict.

As part of the commemorative activities, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar received an official honour from President Boakai on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the people of Nigeria a gesture symbolising Liberia’s gratitude for Nigeria’s unwavering solidarity and historic support.
