President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Ms. Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a news anchor with Arise Television News, who was killed during a robbery at her residence in Abuja.
This is contained in a statement by Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday in Abuja.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu receives with deep sorrow the news of the tragic passing of Ms Somtochukwu ‘Sommie’ Maduagwu, a brilliant news anchor with Arise News Television, who was killed during an attack by robbers at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
President Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the family of Ms Maduagwu, the management and staff of Arise News Television, and the entire Nigerian media fraternity over this painful loss.
President Tinubu says: ” Ms Maduagwu was a promising professional journalist whose life was cut short in a cruel and condemnable manner.
” Security and law enforcement agencies should conduct a quick and thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice without delay”.
While commiserating with the bereaved family, President Tinubu assures Nigerians that his administration remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, and will continue to strengthen measures aimed at combating crime in all its forms.
Also, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has mourned the passage of ARISE Television’s News Anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was reportedly killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile, described the late Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie” by colleagues, as a fast rising star in the broadcast profession, noting that she discharged her duty diligently and passionately while on air, reporting.
The Governor also commiserated with the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues, management and staff of ARISE News, especially the founder Mr. Nduka Obaigbena, over the death of 29-year-old Maduagwu.
He said, “On behalf of the government and the people of Lagos State, we commiserate with ARISE News over the death of one of its news anchors, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was reportedly killed during an armed robbery attack in his house at Abuja.
“Somtochukwu Maduagwu was a diligent and thoroughbred professional. Her death was a big shock considering the way she was killed, but we take solace in the Almighty God that she lived a fulfilled life and made positive impacts in the media industry.
“She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, associates and colleagues and the entire management and staff of ARISE News. I pray that God will comfort everyone that was close to her and grant her eternal rest. My prayers and thoughts are with her immediate family and the Chairman of ARISE TV, Mr. Nduka Obaigbena. May God grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
Similarly, Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo has expressed profound sadness and a deep sense of loss over the heartbreaking news of the tragic death of ARISE TV news anchor, Miss Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu.
MAduagwu, a distinguished daughter of Anambra State was brutally kiilled during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025.
Soludo in a condolence message signed by his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, eulogised Miss Maduagwu, fondly called Sommie, as a shining star whose light has been prematurely extinguished.
The Governor said, “At just 29 years old, she had already distinguished herself as a lawyer-turned News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer with ARISE News Channel, where her vibrant voice and professional excellence connected with audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
“A lawyer by training and a journalist by passion, Sommie exemplified the industrious and excellence-driven spirit for which Anambra indigenes are renowned.
Soludo regretted the circumstances of Maduagwu’s death, which was hitherto cut short in the prime of her youth and career by criminal elements.
He added, “It is not only a personal tragedy to her family but a loss to Anambra State, the journalism profession, and indeed our entire nation.
