Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation Of Amupitan As INEC Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to screen and confirm Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The request was contained in a letter read on Tuesday by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary.

Naija News reports that Tinubu urged the Senate to give “expeditious consideration and approval” to the nomination, which has now been referred to the committee of the whole for legislative action.

Recall that Amupitan was approved as the new chair by the National Council of State last Thursday.

President Tinubu suggested Amupitan for the council after former INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, stepped aside and handed over to May Agbamuche-Mbu in an acting capacity.

Amupitan, if approved by the Senate, would take over from Agbamuche-Mbu, who is currently leading the affairs of the electoral commission.

In a separate communication, the President also sought the confirmation of Mrs Ayo Omidiran as the new Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), alongside 28 nominees for appointment as Federal Commissioners.

Naija News gathered that among the nominees is Dr Ibrahim Abdullahi from Kwara State.

The Senate President assured that the lawmakers would prioritise the screening exercise in line with their legislative duties.
